The Greek Community of Tasmania was honoured to welcome His Eminence Archbishop Makarios to the 2025 Estia Street Festival, where he experienced firsthand the warmth, culture, and spirit of the community.

During his visit, His Eminence engaged with festivalgoers, offered blessings, and immersed himself in the vibrant atmosphere of Greek music, dancing, and traditional food. Speaking in an interview with Hellenic dancer Maria Papadelias, he reflected on the importance of community, stating, “Community is the opposite of isolation. The message of community is that we have to share—share our time, our materials, our smile—share everything.”

He also offered words of guidance for the next generation, emphasising the importance of staying connected to their heritage. “To stay close to our traditions and to our ethos. This is something I used to say to any community; to keep their identity. And we have to keep our identity as Greek and Orthodox,” he said.

The Archbishop commended the Greek Community of Tasmania for its unity and strength, expressing his pride in both the Greek and wider Hobart communities. “I am very proud of the Greek Community here, and I’m very proud of the community of Hobart generally because they’re all together,” he said.

His presence was a proud moment for the festival, reinforcing the deep ties between faith, culture, and connection. The Greek Community of Tasmania thanks His Eminence for his visit and the wisdom he shared, making this year’s festival even more meaningful.
